Stephen Bird
NSW based artist Stephen Bird is an Australian contemporary artist, renowned for his distinctive works in both paint & clay, which blur the boundaries between abstraction and figuration. Bird explores marginalized histories, private narratives and stories culled from folklore. In production, process and materiality his works belong to the domain of craft, while the subversive and often humorous content keeps this category at arm’s length. Bird says, “I believe visual art is all about humanity’s relationship to objects and their ritual use. I wish above all to invoke the emotional connections which are felt towards things that have been made by hand with love". Often using words collage and found objects as part of the final works, he creates powerful multi-dimensional imagery which reflects on the global, transcultural nature of myths and archetypes.
