Alex Standen
Alexandra Standen is an Australian artist whose ceramic work delves into our connections with both physical and emotional spaces. She examines material object's subjective, cultural, and ideological meanings, using them as metaphors for human behaviour. Her practice also delves into the process of creating work in porcelain, a medium that embodies both functional qualities and a delicate, precarious nature. This tension between utility and fragility is central to her exploration, reflecting the nuanced emotional landscape of her work.
In 2019, Standen was awarded the prestigious Cité Internationale des Arts Residency in Paris and also undertook a residency in Istanbul. She won the Sidney Myer Award for Ceramics at Shepparton Art Museum in 2012 and has been a finalist in notable awards including the Churchie National Emerging Art Prize, Gold Coast Ceramic Award, and the Wynne Prize. Additionally, Standen has undertaken residencies in Geneva and Tel Aviv.
